Our Alzheimer's Special Care Unit

Martha Franks is committed to the care and nurturing of each resident of the Special Needs Unit.  This facility is dedicated to the highly personalized and individualized care of persons with Alzheimer's or other related dementia.
Specifically, the Unit provides a therapeutic living environment in which each age-related sensory deficit and cognitive impairment is considered and compensated for in a specially designed, organized and functionally appropriate professional care living center.
Martha Franks has sought to remove the barriers which have historically been found in institutional settings.  Our mission is to create a living space at their maximum capacity regardless of their impairment.
Designed to feel like the kitchen at the old home place, the Alzheimer's kitchen is a favorite room.  Residents actively engage in table setting and clean-up.  The smell of homemade bread, cookies baking, or coffee brewing help to stimulate the residents' memories.  Cabinets stay secure with a concealed locking system, but residents always have access to snacks, plates and cups in the open shelves around the kitchen. The Alzheimer's Bank, located in one corner of the living room, is "open" daily.  Residents can "go to work," rummage through papers, and even count "funny" money in the antique disengaged safe.
This alcove along the corridor in the Alzheimer's unit is strictly for the ladies.  They enjoy primping, and trying on hats, gloves, and scarves in the "grooming" area, and, of course, they love the jewelry!  This spot also provides a pleasant view of the court yard. Located in the Alzheimer's unit, the Men's Club provides a true "men's" space like the barber shop of long ago.  Men can play checkers on the oversized table, watch a baseball game, or reminisce about their old cars and fishing trips to the lake.

The Special Care Unit is dedicated to promoting the following for its residents:
  • Autonomy, self-worth, and human value
  • Privacy and freedom
  • Dignity and respect
  • An enhanced quality of life
  • An opportunity to associate with and give to others
  • A social environment designed to promote comfort, peace, and enrichment
  • Support, education, and concern for the emotional well-being of family members
  • Individualized, quality care delivered by an interdisciplinary team specially educated to relate to individuals with dementia
